Day of Protest – January 23 2017
January 23, 2017 will mark one (1) year that the unionized members of the Halifax Typographical Union (HTU) have been on strike. Many of us know what it is like to be on strike and even though our 2004 strike did not last this long, it was still a very difficult and trying period of time. On Monday, January 23 members are encouraged, if possible, to show their support and attend these rallies for our striking HTU brothers and sisters:
Halifax: The Chronicle Herald building, 2717 Joseph Howe Drive, Halifax. Gather at 12:15 p.m. for 12:30 p.m. start.
Sydney: CBRM City Hall, 320 Esplanade, with hot dogs and hot drinks, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Antigonish: Assemble at 12:15 at Chisholm Park, between Post Office and Whidden’s Bridge, with speeches at 12:30, then a march to MLA Randy Delorey’s office, 202-155 Main Street. Pictou County and Port Hawkesbury supporters welcome!
Yarmouth: Rally begins at 12:30 p.m., MLA Zack Churchill’s office, 396 Main St.
Wolfville: Rally begins at 12:30 p.m., Wolfville Post Office, 407 Main St.
Regional Director District 2
With the recent retirement of long-standing Director, Paul Coulter, the Regional Director, District 2 position is vacant. Per our Local 2289 by-laws Article 6.3 (ii), Stephen Masters has been appointed as interim Director until the 2017 union elections,
New Unit – Antigonish
An Antigonish unit has been established. The 1st meeting of the unit will be Monday, January 23 at 5:30pm at 53 James St.
United Workers of Diversity Committee
Our Local diversity committee is looking for more members. This committee represents the Unifor designated equity seeking groups of: Workers of Colour, Aboriginal, LGBT&Q, Disabled, Young Workers and Women. If you self identify as a representative of one these groups and would like to be a member of this committee, please contact the union office.
